Grace

“You’re leaving?” My brain is shorting out. Theo just kissed me—no, he gave me ten seconds of hot loving up against a wall like I’ve never had—and he’s got a train ticket to LA. In his pocket. Leaving today.

“I can change the ticket.” His hands are in his hair like he wants to pull it out. Instead, he throws his hands out wide. “It’s not what it looks like.”

I slowly hand the ticket back to him. “But you’re leaving.” I reach behind me for the wall—it’s still there. Solid. Unlike the ground shifting under my feet.

It was too good to be true. Too good to last. The first glimmer of happiness I’ve had—real joy, not the fake kind where I forget for a few minutes that Mari’s dead—and it was going to abruptly end. Without warning. Just like everything else.

“Grace, I am not leaving you,” Theo insists, but I can barely hear him over the rushing in my ears.

My brain puts the pieces together even though I don’t want it to—I don’t want to know. “You’re going to be with her. The one your family chose.”

“No!”

It’s so sharp, it yanks me out of my haze.

“Grace.” He takes hold of my shoulders, and I almost shove him away, but I don’t, I just stare up at him. “You are my soul mate.”

“What?” I look at him like he’s crazy because what the fuck?

He releases me and presses his hands together, holding them to his lips and stepping back. “You don’t remember. Do you?”

A wave of dizziness sweeps over me, but I’ve got the wall to brace me. “Remember what?”

He starts gesturing like somehow that will make me understand. “You were out when we rescued you. When I rescued you, Grace.”

What is he talking about? The set?

“We brought you back to the hospice center at the lair—”

“Wait, what?” Lair? What the fuck is he—

“—but you were in a bad way. The doctors wanted to keep you for a while, said it was better if I didn’t visit, but then you woke up, Grace.”

“The fuck are you talking about?” A panicky feeling is banging around in my chest.

“I’m trying to tell you.” He looks like he’s about to cry, which makes no fucking sense. “You woke up, and somehow, you and Jayda found each other in the hospice. And she demanded the doctors let you go. And of course, we couldn’t keep you—wouldn’t keep you—we’re the dragons who rescued you…” But he’s trailing off now, looking more upset, and I realize he’s reacting to me—to my face. Because it’s frozen in horror.

Because I remember.

I remember the hospital.

I remember the torture.

I remember the aliens and their crystal mind-fuck probe and the screams. All the screams.

“No.” I shake my head and jab a finger at him. “No! You were not there.”

“No, I wasn’t.” He looks ashamed about this. “I should have been. But they thought—Niko, the Lord of our Lair thought—it was better if you didn’t see me. Not yet. Not until… I could…” He stops and looks like he’s going to be sick.
