Grace
âYouâre leaving?â My brain is shorting out. Theo just kissed meâno, he gave me ten seconds of hot loving up against a wall like Iâve never hadâand heâs got a train ticket to LA. In his pocket. Leaving today.
âI can change the ticket.â His hands are in his hair like he wants to pull it out. Instead, he throws his hands out wide. âItâs not what it looks like.â
I slowly hand the ticket back to him. âBut youâre leaving.â I reach behind me for the wallâitâs still there. Solid. Unlike the ground shifting under my feet.
It was too good to be true. Too good to last. The first glimmer of happiness Iâve hadâreal joy, not the fake kind where I forget for a few minutes that Mariâs deadâand it was going to abruptly end. Without warning. Just like everything else.
âGrace, I am not leaving you,â Theo insists, but I can barely hear him over the rushing in my ears.
My brain puts the pieces together even though I donât want it toâI donât want to know. âYouâre going to be with her. The one your family chose.â
âNo!â
Itâs so sharp, it yanks me out of my haze.
âGrace.â He takes hold of my shoulders, and I almost shove him away, but I donât, I just stare up at him. âYou are my soul mate.â
âWhat?â I look at him like heâs crazy because what the fuck?
He releases me and presses his hands together, holding them to his lips and stepping back. âYou donât remember. Do you?â
A wave of dizziness sweeps over me, but Iâve got the wall to brace me. âRemember what?â
He starts gesturing like somehow that will make me understand. âYou were out when we rescued you. When I rescued you, Grace.â
What is he talking about? The set?
âWe brought you back to the hospice center at the lairââ
âWait, what?â Lair? What the fuck is heâ
ââbut you were in a bad way. The doctors wanted to keep you for a while, said it was better if I didnât visit, but then you woke up, Grace.â
âThe fuck are you talking about?â A panicky feeling is banging around in my chest.
âIâm trying to tell you.â He looks like heâs about to cry, which makes no fucking sense. âYou woke up, and somehow, you and Jayda found each other in the hospice. And she demanded the doctors let you go. And of course, we couldnât keep youâwouldnât keep youâweâre the dragons who rescued youâ¦â But heâs trailing off now, looking more upset, and I realize heâs reacting to meâto my face. Because itâs frozen in horror.
Because I remember.
I remember the hospital.
I remember the torture.
I remember the aliens and their crystal mind-fuck probe and the screams. All the screams.
âNo.â I shake my head and jab a finger at him. âNo! You were not there.â
âNo, I wasnât.â He looks ashamed about this. âI should have been. But they thoughtâNiko, the Lord of our Lair thoughtâit was better if you didnât see me. Not yet. Not until⦠I couldâ¦â He stops and looks like heâs going to be sick.
